RX for Kids
Reduce the need for children to be moved into out-of-home placements due to child abuse of substance abuse exposure.
What We Do
We provide unique and innovative Public Health child abuse intervention services. Working with Children and Family Services, our Public Health nurses work in all areas of child protection from investigation, court unit, drug court, family maintenance, family re-unification through emancipation. We provide medical care coordination and advocacy for children in Child Protective Services. We give children comprehensive in-home nursing assessments, substance exposure screenings, and developmental screenings. We use evidence-based, valid, and reliable screening tools. We also refer children to resources as needed. We conduct specialized in-home visits to children with complex health conditions. We educate biological and foster parents health to support the child’s optimal growth and development.
Drug Endangered Child (DEC) Response
We are integral members of the Ventura County Drug Endangered Child (DEC) team. We respond with Children and Family Services
social workers and law enforcement to:
- Level one DEC: methamphetamine labs or marijuana growth and production or
- Level two DEC: drug use and/or sales where children are present.
We assess and triage children’s medical care needs. We also assist in the decontamination process, gathering medical information on each involved child and provide medical follow up. Our protocols follow National DEC guidelines.
