Emergency Medical ServicesEmergency Medical Technician Programs

The Career
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's) provide emergency and non-emergency patient care and transportation. Common areas of employment include ambulance service, industrial safety positions, fire departments, and other public safety agencies.

Scope of Practice
Basic airway management, CPR, bandaging, splinting, patient assessment, advanced life support assistance skills, etc. The EMT does not administer medications with the exception of oxygen, oral glucose, and physician prescribed bronchodialators (some exceptions may apply according to the area where the EMT will be employed).

  • 18 years old
  • Clean criminal record (some exceptions apply)

Ventura College Paramedic Studies Program

Ventura College provides the only fully accredited paramedic training program in the nation. The Paramedic Studies program is a full time two-semester program designed to prepare individuals to work as paramedics with specific knowledge of the paramedic profession, sound theoretical rationale, critical thinking skills and proficiency in practical skills, which will provide the basis for decision-making and success in the workplace. Successful completion of this program will allow the student to sit for the National Registry of EMT-Ps Licensing Examination. In keeping with the standard in the state of California, this program will offer two tracks: preparation for certification as a paramedic, with or without an associate degree.

Prerequisites

  • High School Graduation or GED
  • Current EMT-1 Certificate
  • Current BCLS Certification
  • Demonstrated competency in English and math
  • College level anatomy and physiology with lab
  • 1000 hours experience as an EMT with a primary “911“ responder, with emphasis on prehospital field care

National Registry Testing

Beginning on January 1, 2007 National Registry will begin computer-based testing only. All applications will be submitted electronically to National Registry and all tests will be taken via computer. Ventura County EMS will no longer be giving National Registry exams. If you have questions regarding testing, please contact National Registry at 614-888-4484.
