What is the California Smokers' Helpline?
It is a non-profit organization that provides free cessation
services to tobacco users who want to quit. It is operated by University
of California, San Diego and is funded by the California Department
of Health Services through Prop. 99, the 1988 Tobacco Tax Health
Protection Act.
Who can call the Helpline?
Anyone in California who would like help or information on quitting
tobacco, whether you are a current smoker, former smoker, or
a friend or relative who would like to help a smoker.
What kind of services might I receive through the Helpline?
- One-on-one telephone counseling
- Informative booklets to help you quit on your own and remain
tobacco-free
- Referrals to local quit assistance programs and classes
- Opportunities for Participation in various tobacco-related
research projects
- Special Assistance for teenagers, pregnant woman, and/or users
of chewing tobacco
What Can I Expect When I Call?
A Helpline professional will ask you a few questions to assess
your needs, and then offer you a choice of services. If you are
ready to quit and want counseling, they can make arrangements
for you to speak to a trained quit assistance counselor at your
convenience.
